The Oranje app the ultimate companion for fans of the Netherlands national football team. Built in collaboration with KNVB, this app isn’t just about keeping up with scores; it’s about bringing fans closer to the team they love. Whether it’s the buzz of match day or staying connected during the off-season, the Oranje app makes sure fans never miss a moment.
We’re doing this by giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at their favorite team and creating a space where they can connect with each other. It’s not just an app, it’s a way to feel part of the orange army, no matter where you are.
ROLE & APPROACH
As the UX/UI lead, my role was to design an experience that felt as passionate and alive as the Oranje fanbase itself. We started with a discovery phase to dig deep into what fans wanted most and what KNVB needed to achieve. Weekly design concept reviews kept us aligned, helping us juggle big ideas with the tight timeline, we had to launch before the Euros in Germany in 2024.
One of our biggest goals was mapping out the fan journey. How do we keep people excited, even when there’s no match? How do we make game days unforgettable? And how do we keep that energy alive after the final whistle? From pre-match hype with reminders and rituals, to real-time matchday highlights, to post-game reactions that keep fans talking, every feature was designed to amplify the love for Oranje.
We also introduced some unique features to take the fan experience to another level. For instance, the “Check-In” feature allows fans to mark where they’re watching the game and see where others are gathering. Whether you’re looking for a packed bar or a quieter spot, you can choose the vibe that suits you, and unlock exclusive content as a reward for checking in. From behind-the-scenes videos to special messages from players, this feature makes every fan feel part of the action. On match day, we also revamped the timeline, adding richer, more engaging content, live updates, and interactive elements to bring fans closer to the energy of the game.
CHALLENGE & IMPACT
The biggest challenge? Time was a huge factor, but it wasn’t the only one. We also had to figure out how to make the app just as engaging during the quiet times as it is on match day. How do we keep fans coming back when there’s no game? And how do we help fans connect with each other, building a real community within the app?
To solve this, we focused on creating year-round engagement through exclusive behind-the-scenes content, fan-driven communities, and interactive features that kept the Oranje spirit alive, no matter the season. The result? User growth shot up by 400%, the app became the #1 touchpoint for Oranje fans, and it’s sitting strong with a 4.1-star App Store rating. Plus, the app’s success strengthened existing partnerships and opened doors to new ones, proving that a great fan experience benefits everyone.
